Seni 2012: Alexander Shines But Misses Out! PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Wednesday, 06 June 2012 17:12

Dean Alexander & Tom Ward topped the bill at this years Seni show with a fantastic display of K1 action.
Contesting the IKF English Welterweight K1 title, this was always going to be an explosive encounter.
Alexander has quietly built his record to 10-1-1 whilst Ward, who is a likeable character has also been quietly accumulating a quality record of 9-2.
The first round saw an equal exchange of shots and plenty of clinch & knee work. Ward was stronger than expected and worked his low kick to good effect. Alexander’s punches were more accurate.
It was clear that both men were of similar stock and it was going to be about the later rounds.
By round 3 Ward was shading each round and Alexander was already looking for the stoppage. This changed his game plan and he went looking for Ward with punch combinations.
Ward had worked hard and flaws were showing in his defence, but still his work rate was high and of good quality.
The 4th round was more of the same with Ward sweeping Alexander constantly, draining his energy and coming out for the 5th Alexander marched on, looking for the KO.
Ward was tired and was now being caught with 4 and 5 shots, jerking his head back. Still he returned fire but looked to be in a little trouble throughout.
To his credit he never once held on, opting for the attacking stance which had the crowd roaring with approval.
As the final bell approached the referee looked closely at Ward but he kept it together to run away with the points victory and the belt.
With the presentation made by Remy Bonjasky in person, it was a fitting end to a classic encounter.
On the day Ward was just that bit fitter, but Alexander can use this as a platform and will now sit amongst those elite title contenders.

John Whittam: ABA Success! PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Wednesday, 09 May 2012 06:02

john whitJohn Whittams venture in Amateur Boxing is proving to be a successful one.

He has notched up 2 straight wins and looks to be heading for more success come the new season in October.

He got off to a shaky start in his first contest, being wobbled early and taking a count in the first round, before coming back strongly to force a count on his opponent in the 2nd. He then dominated the remainder of the contest to come through his first acid test.

His second encounter was a little more straight forward, with his opponent never really getting into it and being stopped in the 2nd round.

Look out for more action before the close of season!

Utilising elements of the Filipino Martial Arts delivered via a modern day sensibility he has developed something that will enhance the game of the beginner and seasoned fighter alike. ‘Ghost Fighting’ is an intelligent solution to the age-old question of how to minimise being hit by an opponent and, when it is demonstrated by someone of Phil’s calibre, evolution and execution come together to make those watching true believers.

Terry Barnett – March 2012: Phil Norman is one of the very few Full instructors under Guru Dan Inosanto, Has been awarded instructor qualification under Sifu Rick Faye, Sensei Erik Paulson, Sensei Yorinaga Nakamura, Prof Salem Assli, Paul Vunak. Strictly Business: James Cornick V Mads Valencia PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Tuesday, 13 March 2012 23:37

JCMVOur bill topper turned into probably the best Kickboxing bout of the last few years as James Cornick (Team Bulldog) and Mads Valencia (Bergen Norway) stood toe to toe for six rounds of non-stop action.

Both men have been mixing in world class for the last 15 months, and not quite cutting it. Their list of opponents is extremely impressive but both have been on the recieving end of close but correct decisions. This was an opportunity to bounce back onto the world stage and they both took it by the horns.

As usual Cornick came straight out to work with blistering combinations, but Valencia sent the message back - 'anything you can do...'. The Norwegian beat his chest and howled at the crowd as he returned fire and you could have put them both in a telephone box for this one as neither gave an inch for the entire duration.

Solid body shots thundered in with Cornick just that little bit ahead most of the time, but the explosive work rate of both fighters left the jaw dropped crowd roaring.

By the fourth, Cornick, as usual stepped up a gear that no one expected him to have, but Valencia went right with him without a hint of fatigue. It looked as though they could go all night and we wished they would. The punches and kicks remained crisp, strong and solid. Both men fought intelligently and it certainly showed you what the finished article looks like.

Every single person was on their feet as the last 30 seconds saw both men trade right to the bell with no sign of letting up, and referee Mark Woodard had to pull them apart as the noise was so loud that no one heard the finish.

An absolutely top notch performance from both men with a deserved decision going to James Cornick.

It was a fantastic high to end the evening on!

Strictly Business: Dean Alexander V James Hill PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Tuesday, 13 March 2012 23:28

DAJHThis was a mouth watering clash between two excellent prospects - Dean Alexander (Team Bulldog) & James Hill (Bull Ring Gym).

Fought under K1 rules both men were right where they wanted to be, fighting their favourite rule set.

Alexander had been out for over a year with various injuries but seemed to have cured his slow start habit as he came straight at Hill, who for his part met fire with fire, dropping in solid low kicks.

But every kick was met with punch combinations from Alexander who unsettled Hill and would not let him work. Soon he also began to clinch and knee and it was clear that Hill was not dealing with this.

At every opportunity now, Alexander was kneeing and trading punches. At times the low kicks were being gifted but went begging in favour of the more dominant knees.

You could forgive Alexander for sticking with what was working but on each release Hill would unload several punches or low kicks of his own before taking more punishment.

At the final bell this was a clear victory for Alexander, earning him the 'Fighter of the night' award in the process!

Strictly Business: Ben Evans V Nick Briant PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Tuesday, 13 March 2012 23:19

BENBYou would not have wanted to stand between these two heavyweights! Ben Evans (Team Bulldog) & Nick Briant (Boxing Bournemouth) served up a treat over three rounds of non-stop Boxing action.

The skills were nice, the power was solid and the variation exciting for two first timers.

Both had an army of fans with them and were desperate to put in a show stopping performance. They did not disappoint!

This one swung back and forth for the entire duration. Both men were rocked but would not be moved, and Evans in particular picked up facial damage early on.

It was fast becoming one of the fights of the night and the audience roared with approval with every exchange. Just as you thought that one fighter may be edging ahead, the other would come back with more of the same. It was one of those fights that you wished was longer (although the fighters may tell you a different story).

An absolute value for money clash that could only end one way - in a draw!

Strictly Business: Clara Norman V Heidi Guldseth PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Tuesday, 13 March 2012 23:09

CNHG 2Clara Norman (Team Bulldog) turned in a career best performance in her international clash against Heidi Guldseth (Bergen, Norway).

The Bournemouth boxer kept the Norwegian on the back foot for almost the entire contest but had to eat a lot of leather in the process.

The result all depended on how you saw the contest and both corners were convinced that they had the victory.

The first round was an all out war with both girls trading. Norman was stronger but Guldseth played clever and picked her off as she came in. There wasn't much between them and this reflected in the scoring.

The second started fast but both girls were feeling it by the mid-way point, but they rallied to finish strongly. Norman unloaded in clusters but Guldseth could'nt miss through the middle with an accurate jab.

The final round was a slugfest with both girls feeling that they had to make sure. Just as they looked like they were fading, they would find a second wind, and a third, and a fourth!

The final bell couldn't come quick enough and both camps celebrated feeling that they had the victory.

As it was Guldseth got the nod by 2-1, but this is a match that should go again, and probably again!
