Seni 2012: Alexander Shines But Misses Out! PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Dean Alexander & Tom Ward topped the bill at this years Seni show with a fantastic display of K1 action.
Contesting the IKF English Welterweight K1 title, this was always going to be an explosive encounter.
Alexander has quietly built his record to 10-1-1 whilst Ward, who is a likeable character has also been quietly accumulating a quality record of 9-2.
The first round saw an equal exchange of shots and plenty of clinch & knee work. Ward was stronger than expected and worked his low kick to good effect. Alexander’s punches were more accurate.
It was clear that both men were of similar stock and it was going to be about the later rounds.
By round 3 Ward was shading each round and Alexander was already looking for the stoppage. This changed his game plan and he went looking for Ward with punch combinations.
Ward had worked hard and flaws were showing in his defence, but still his work rate was high and of good quality.
The 4th round was more of the same with Ward sweeping Alexander constantly, draining his energy and coming out for the 5th Alexander marched on, looking for the KO.
Ward was tired and was now being caught with 4 and 5 shots, jerking his head back. Still he returned fire but looked to be in a little trouble throughout.
To his credit he never once held on, opting for the attacking stance which had the crowd roaring with approval.
As the final bell approached the referee looked closely at Ward but he kept it together to run away with the points victory and the belt.
With the presentation made by Remy Bonjasky in person, it was a fitting end to a classic encounter.
On the day Ward was just that bit fitter, but Alexander can use this as a platform and will now sit amongst those elite title contenders.
